Local Unions Ready to Tee Off

For the 22nd year, three local unions will tee off to provide funds for the SBAWP FireFly Camps and Retreats program.  The annual event that is open to everyone is sponsored by the Boilermakers Local 154, the Steamfitters Local 449 and the Ironworkers Local 3.  These three unions have championed sending youth and adults to summer camps and weekend retreats.

Laps for Life
Swimming for SWPA

On Friday August 27, 2010, Varney Holland will be holding "Laps for Life" a swim to raise money for SBAWP, at the Baierl YMCA, 6:30pm-7:30pm .  Please sponsor Varney's swim by logging onto http://lightupalife.sbawp.org and donating to his page – Search "Varney Holland."

Varney will also be raffling off a signed Mario Lemieux jersey.  Raffle tickets are: 1 ticket for $5, 3 tickets for $10, and 10 tickets for $20.  Order your raffle tickets by sending the amount of your purchase, your name and contact information to Melissa McCarrell, c/o SBAWP, 1158 Dutilh Road Mars, PA 16046 no later than Thursday August 26.

 2nd Annual Summer Festival Presented by Seubert & Associates is scheduled for August 8, 2010, from 2 pm to 8 pm. We need at least 150 volunteer hours on the day of the event. This is a fun way to enjoy the day and help the Association at the same time.

SBAWP Launches Membership Drive

 

The Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania has launched a membership campaign designed to promote involvement in the Association.  Dick Lynch, Executive Director, said, "For many years, membership has not been emphasized.  In order to encourage many to join with us, we put together a special set of members only perks that varies based on the membership level chosen."  Four levels of membership are being offered - Firefly, Friend, Hero and Visionary - each with different minimum dues.

Pochatko to lead Adult Community Services

On Monday, March 1, Jeremy Pochatko became the Manager of Community Services and Support at the Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania (SBAWP). The SBAWP's Adult Community Services Program helps individuals with spina bifida and other related disabilities gain independent living skills. Some of these individuals have completed the SBAWP's Gatehouse program, which provides life skills, educational and vocational training and assists them with transitioning to adulthood in a supportive and structured environment.

Seven SBAWP Employees Honored

Seven employees were honored by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for their years of service to individuals and families of individuals with Spina Bifida. The award and recognition occurred during the Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania's Annual Summer Festival held on June 20, 2009 at Greentree Farm in Cheswick, PA.

Mr. Jacob Haberman, legislative assistant to Rep. Mike Turzai, was on hand to present the award to Wayne Martin - 19 years of service; Jody Ahern - 17 years of service; Christina Reppermund - 16 years of service; Rebecca Crim - 13 years of service; and Melissa McCarrell, Leanne Rader, and Kathy Patton - each with 10 years of service. (Christina and Leanne were not available for the picture.  Mr. Peter Kochis, President of the Board of Directors of SBAWP is on the extreme right.)

SBAWP Moves To New Headquarters

The Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania (SBAWP) has moved its administrative headquarters to 1158 Dutilh Road Mars, PA. The move is part of a broader effort to expand the Association's capacity to deliver exceptional programming and services to individuals and their families who are living with spina bifida and other related disabilities. The SBAWP will continue to maintain its "Groves Campus" situated next to the Woodland's Foundation, Inc. in Wexford, PA. The Gatehouse and the Fithian House at the Groves will continue to provide exceptional housing and supportive transitional and independent living services to individuals with spina bifida and other related disabilities.

Wii Tournament a Success!

In the spirit of promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyles for individuals with spina bifida, the SBAWP hosted its first ever Wii Tournament on March 28th!  Nine teams of four went head to head competing for prizes playing Wii Bowling at three different locations on the SBAWP's Groves Campus along with particpants attending an SBAWP adult weekend retreat at the Woodlands Camp Facility.  All the participants enjoyed themselves while cheering on friends and supporting their teammates!

Gaming Our Way To Health

The SBAWP has recently been awarded a generous grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation. The Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy.

The SBAWP has recently been awarded a generous grant from the FISA Foundation for its Skills Training and Rehabilitation for Individual Vocational Enhancement Program (S.T.R.I.V.E.) The mission of the FISA foundation is to build a culture of respect and improve the quality of life for three populations in southwestern Pennsylvania: women, girls, and people with disabilities.

Fithian House Gets First Residents

The first residents have begun to move into Fithian House, a 14-unit handicapped accessible apartment complex located in Wexford, PA on the campus of the Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania. Named in honor of the former Chairman of the Board of SBAWP, Ted Fithian, who passed away in September, 2008, the Fithian House will be "home" to individuals with spina bifida who are living independently within the community.
