FireFly Weekend Retreat Program Expands

Partnering with Camp Victory

Camp Victory is a fully handicap accessible facility located northeast of Bloomsburg, PA. For many years, volunteers have held a summer camp for individuals with spina bifida. "Our FireFly Weekend Retreat program has always been a popular offering to individuals in Western Pennsylvania," said Dick Lynch, Executive Director of SBAWP. "When we realized that there was nothing like it in the center part of the state, we set about to find a location that could host us on an ongoing basis. Camp Victory's relationship with the Spina Bifida Clinic at Geisinger Medical Center and the accessibility of Camp Victory made this a natural partnership."

We anticipate that many who attend the FireFly Weekend Retreats will already be familiar with the camp from their involvement in the summer camping program that is held at Camp Victory. Others may choose the Camp Victory location because of proximity to their home. These retreats not only provide a great experience for the campers but also give the caregivers a respite in the early fall.

The SBAWP will hold the first FireFly Retreat at Camp Victory on November 5-7, 2010. It will be for youth and teens ages 8 to 21. The retreat will incorporate all of the activities and learning details that other FireFly Weekend Retreats include. This retreat will be in addition to those retreats scheduled for western Pennsylvania. All FireFly Weekend Retreats are open to individuals with spina bifida and related disabilities.
